Many customs and traditional ways of behavior are no longer relevant to modern life and not worth keeping. Do you agree or disagree?
It is argued that numerous traditional customs and behavioural norms are outdated in contemporary society and thus deserve to be abandoned. I completely disagree with this view, as traditions carry irreplaceable cultural and social value even in modern times.
Admittedly, a small number of outdated customs that violate human rights or contradict modern social values should be eliminated. For example, the old tradition of forcing women to bind their feet in ancient China, which severely damaged women's physical health and restricted their personal freedom, has long been abolished as it conflicts with modern values of gender equality. However, this does not mean all traditions are irrelevant.
First, most traditional customs are vital carriers of cultural identity, which connects people to their roots and strengthens communal bonds. The Chinese Spring Festival tradition of family reunions, for instance, remains highly relevant today. Even as millions of people work far from their hometowns in this fast-paced mobile era, the annual Spring Festival gathering gives people a sense of belonging, eases their pressure from busy work, and reinforces family ties that are often weakened by modern urban lifestyles.
Second, many traditional behavioural norms offer timeless guidance for social interactions. The traditional value of respecting the elderly and caring for the young, for example, is still the foundation of harmonious social relations in modern communities, from workplace etiquette to public behaviour norms. Abandoning such traditions would erode the moral fabric of society.
In conclusion, while a tiny minority of harmful outdated customs should be discarded, the vast majority of traditions remain highly relevant and are definitely worth preserving as they sustain cultural identity and support positive social functioning.
