It costs a lot of money for a country to host an international sports event, such as the Olympic Games or football World Cup. Some people think that this is a waste of money, while others believe the opposite. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Hosting global sports events like the Olympics or World Cup divides opinion over its financial value. While some argue such events are a waste of national funds, I believe their long-term benefits outweigh initial costs, as long as investments are strategically planned.

Critics of hosting major sports events often highlight the enormous upfront expenditure that strains public budgets. Constructing state-of-the-art stadiums, athlete villages, and upgrading transport infrastructure can cost billions, money that could otherwise be directed to urgent public needs like healthcare, education, or poverty alleviation. For instance, the 2016 Rio Olympics left several purpose-built venues abandoned, with the city struggling to fund public services in subsequent years, a case critics cite as proof of wasted resources. In addition, security costs and temporary service disruptions for local residents often add to the perceived lack of value for ordinary taxpayers.

However, proponents argue that these events can deliver lasting economic and social returns. First, the influx of international tourists during the event boosts local hospitality, retail and transport sectors, generating immediate revenue. More importantly, improved infrastructure can serve communities for decades: the London 2012 Olympics, for example, regenerated the previously deprived Stratford area, turning it into a residential and commercial hub with world-class sports facilities still used by locals today. Hosting such events also raises a country’s global profile, attracting future foreign investment and fostering national pride among citizens.

In my view, hosting international sports events is not inherently wasteful. The key is to design venues and infrastructure with long-term public use in mind, rather than building extravagant, single-use facilities. When planned thoughtfully, these events can leave a positive legacy that justifies the initial spending.
